These programs, shot on location in Mexico, look at Aztec society at it's peak and what happened when the Spanish arrived in 1520.
Mexico has a fascinating history, vividly revealed in its buildings and its people. It was home to several past societies: the Omecs, the Mayas and then the Aztecs, and was on the receiving end of European sea-borne exploration and colonisation when the Spanish came in the 16th century.
The programs look at the rulers and the ruled, wars and warfare, and the Aztecs complex religious practices and beliefs, customs and legends. finally we tell the dramatic story of the clash of cultures that occurred when the Spanish arrived and what happened afterwards.

01. In Search of the Aztecs
Starting in present day Mexico City, presenter Jayne Constantinis finds evidence of the great Aztec Empire that flourished in Central American around 500 years ago. She explores the remains of the Aztec temples under the centre of Mexico City, and sees some of the amazing objects found there. This is the starting point for an enquiry into everyday Aztec life, the role of Aztec warriors and priests, and an examination of Aztec beliefs and religious rituals, which included human sacrifice. |
