Count Us In

Count Us In

Mathematics

lower primary

Duration: 15 mins

Through two puppet monsters, Dodly and Flynn, animations, songs and rhymes, Count Us In takes young viewers through a lively and fun exploration of mathematics topics. Areas covered follow mathematic curriculum content strands investigating pattern, number, measurement and chance and data.

In each program the content develops from the use of concrete representation of numbers to exploring problems where there is less reliance on such representation. There is also a strong emphasis on mathematical language and on encouraging estimation and self-correction.

01. Comparing and Classifying
Flynn tries to sort and tidy his toy box with the help of Dodly. They use various ways to compare groups of numbers up to ten. Animated segments re-inforce and develop different techniques for comparing the size of groups including:
  • subitisation
  • matching
  • counting
  • knowledge of numbers, ie. I know 6 is a bigger number than 4
Friday
1 August
10.00am
02. Patterning
Dodly and Flynn explore patterns on a holiday island. Types of patterns investigated include linear, circular and two dimensinal patterns, audio as well as visual, eg pattern types: aa, aabb, abc. The program focuses on
  • identifying and reading patterns
  • copying patterns
  • ,
  • continuing patterns
  • copying the same pattern with different media
Friday
8 August
10.00am
03. Counting
Dodly and Flynn are stuck inside on a rainy day. In finding different ways to amuse themselves many opportunities arise for counting up to ten. Support segments include counting down a rocket launch and using fingers to count. Key aspects of counting explored include:
  • one to one correspondence
  • cardinality (the number of items in the group will be the same no matter what order they are counted in and the last number counted tells us how many items are in the group
  • counting on
  • counting back
Friday
15 August
10.00am
04. Ordinal Number
Flynn throws a birthday party for his toy dinosaurs. Ordinal number becomes relevant as the puppets make a cake for the party and organise the dinosaurs to play games. The puppets and other segments encourage viewers to identify and name places in sequence and to:
  • give thought to the start point and the direction of the sequence
  • identify and matching ordinal numbers to cardinal number
  • solve problems using ordinal number
Friday
22 August
10.00am
05. Representing Number 1-5
The puppets run a carnival stand where Flynn manages to get hit by beanbags and where numbers are represented in different ways. Other segments in the program include a song about number one, a detective looking for representation of two and a Double Decker bus used to model the 'ten frame'. The mathematical focus is how numbers can be communicated and includes:
  • linking the different representations of number
  • developing an appreciation of the part/part/whole relationship of numbers
Friday
29 August
10.00am
06. Representing Number 6-10
In this program Flynn is making a volcano for his dinosaurs while Dodly is trying to rescue them from the volcano, which he's sure is alive. Together Flynn and Dodly try to keep track of numbers of snails, dinosaurs and cup cakes. Other segments in the program include the eight performing baked beans and the super seven. As in program five the emphasis in representing numbers 6-10 is on
  • linking the different representations of number
  • developing an appreciation of the part/part/whole relationship of numbers
Friday
5 September
10.00am
07. Addition
The puppets are camping. They collect and count sticks, compare mosquito bites and keep track of the number of monsters in a camp side story. The puppet and other segments include:
  • identifying the two numbers which have to be combined
  • adding one to achieve the next counting number
  • emphasising the value of starting with the biggest number
  • adding using doubles
Friday
12 September
10.00am
08. Subtraction
Flynn fancies himself as a magician. Dodly becomes his assistant and together they make muffins disappear and real guinea pigs appear. Other segments include animated peas being eaten one by one and a game of real life bowls. Topics covered include:
  • the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction
  • linking subtraction to the counting sequence
Friday
19 September
10.00am
09. Data
Dodly is setting up his own cafe. But what food should he serve? And how much of each type of food does he need? With Flynn's help he uses data to answer his questions. Flynn all the while is asking the question "will I ever get fed?". Aspects of data explored include:
  • generating questions and predicting answers
  • sorting and classifying
  • representing data
  • interpreting data
Friday
26 September
10.00am
10. Time
Dodly is anxiously preparing for a special day and with Flynn's help finds different ways to pass the time. Aspects of time explored by the puppets and inother segments include:
  • informal measurement of time eg. clapping
  • the need for accurate time measurements
  • the differences between digital and analog clocks
Friday
17 October
10.00am
11. Numbers
Dodly is keeping track of sheep arriving in the backyard. While Flynn doesn't believe that there are sheep outside, he helps Dodly by suggesting different ways to record numbers up to ten. The underlying theme is the effectiveness of our number system in recording numbers. All of the segments explore aspects of numbers including:
  • different ways to record numbers, eg. picture representations, strokes, numerals
  • the idea that numbers have evolved eg.what did the numeral 3 once look like?
  • introduction to contemporary numerals other than Hindu-Arabic eg. Bungla from Bangladesh
Friday
24 October
10.00am
12. Chance
Dodly and Flynn head for the beach and Dodly makes sure he's prepared for all weather possibilities. They weigh up influences as they explore possible outcomes in choosing lollies and digging holes and discover that when it comes to crab bites, even the unlikely is possible!

The program includes:
  • making predictions based on an understanding of possible outcomes
  • making decisions based on predictions
  • understanding that in some chance situations, outcomes can be influenced.
Friday
31 October
10.00am
13. Halves
Dodly is practising to become a karate monster. He helps chop chocolate and eggs into halves, while Flynn uses halves to fold a paper plane and share the bathroom mirror. The prgoram offers a basic non-numeric look at halves using objects of varying shapes. It encourages:
  • the understanding of half as a mathematical concept
  • the use of symmetry to determine half
Friday
7 November
10.00am
14. Length
Flynn is making a bus. He compares it with Dodly's bus then Flynn uses measurement to make a garage for his bus. The program starts with identifying the attribute of length including width and height. It also looks at:
  • the conservation of length
  • establishing a gauge to describe and communicate length
  • using informal multiple and then single units to measure length
  • using body parts to measure and develop an appreciation of the need for a common unit
Friday
14 November
10.00am
15. Capacity
The puppets prepare to go camping and, once there, Dodly collects stones and uses measurement to make a damper. The puppet and animated segments look at:
  • the attribute of capacity ie. how much a container can hold
  • full, empty and overflow
  • the conservation of capacity
  • the use of informal multiple and single units to measure capacity
