Applying foundation
For Gold Coast-born Selena Pertzel, some of the best fun she's had as a make-up and hair artist has been about making people anything but beautiful. She explains that for one TV show "We needed to make up twenty cave men in the morning with prosthetic foreheads and noses and beards and moustaches and wigs and false teeth - the whole thing. They were all grubbied up all over. That was great fun."
It was movie-style effect that got Selena into make-up and she studied at Queensland's Frampton school, founded by an Oscar winning make-up artist. Her course was an intensive three month course and has gone on to work on music videos for Pete Murray – (“He’s really one of those people who doesn’t want to look like he’s got make-up on so he’s really low key and really easy.”) Dallas Crane and Tripod.
Cosmetic Improvements
There's no average day when you're looking after cast of characters in a film, play or TV show. "One day you might go in and do prosthetic work," Selena says, "and then the next you’re doing beauty work and the next you’re throwing mud at people.”
Days can be very long with an “average of 16-17 hours if they’re paying you overtime.” And a lot of the job is about working very closely with celebrities. “Being in the make-up bus you’re not just their make-up artist,” Selena reckons. “You’re also their psychologist… they sit there and they talk to you about what’s going on at home.”
Highlights
As well as film and TV work, Selena has worked on short films. "I’m heading off to America in June to source some work and going to the make-up trade show over there and work on a few short films."
It's a job that travels well with directors keen to work with the same people on set. "As I went along directors got to know me and the work that I did so then they start calling you and asking you to do jobs," Selena explains.
And not only are you up close and personal with stars everday, but you might even get to be such good friends that'll give you more work. "The girl who did Gwyneth Paltrow’s make-up - Gwyneth takes her from movie to movie, so she doesn’t even have to negotiate her contract or anything."
