Benji Kirkpatrick/ Faustus
|
Benji Kirkpatrick is a passionate young Englishman. He is a powerful player of bouzoukis and guitars and an eloquent singer. A fine interpreter of traditional songs and tunes, he writes good new ones too and is now one of the busiest people in English ‘roots’ music. We co-feature two new albums. Boomerang is Benji’s new CD as singer-songwriter. Faustus is the eponymous debut from a trio which inclines mostly to traditional English songs. Its members sing as well as they play. Benji’s colleagues are melodeon ace Saul Rose and fiddler Paul Sartin, who also plays oboe.

A Dropkick, a Scrunchy and Other Tips for Scottish Fiddlers
Fiddler Chris Duncan and pianist Catherine Strutt are leading Australian players of Scottish music. Their long partnership revels in the discipline of playing for dances as well as much-acclaimed work as recording and concert artists. In a congenial exchange recorded at this year’s Fairbridge Festival, Robyn Johnston finds out about Scottish fiddle traditions and techniques (including the dropkick, the scrunchy and the handy trick that lets you play day and night at a Scottish wedding without wearing out your bow arm). We’ll also hear how Scotland’s regional cultures are reflected in its fiddle music and sample the work of some great Scottish composers.
Produced by Robyn Johnston and David Le May
Sound engineer David Le May
This Scots-centric edition of ’Into the Music’ also reveals why/how English accordionist Martin Green became a leading figure in Scottish roots music.
