Dørge Becker Carlsen ( in church! )

For nearly three decades Danish guitarist Pierre Dørge has led one of the world’s more eclectic, creative and entertaining large ensembles. Keyboardist Irene Becker and reeds player Morten Carlsen are also founder-members of New Jungle Orchestra. Pierre, Irene and Morten’s occasional trio inclines rather more to contemplation and to intimate settings, most especially churches. The Skagen Concert was recorded in one, in Denmark’s northernmost town, near the tip of the Jutland Peninsula. We also venture into a Norwegian church tonight - in Oslo, where John Surman and Howard Moody recently recorded some sublime duets.

For more about Pierre Dørge etc, this is still the best place to start:

( impressionistic, lyrical, overtly Chinese-accented in places. Begins with shimmer-swells from Pierre Dørge’s elec guitar, alone. Guitar then goes ’Chinese-lute-esque’, and elec piano soon joins. Eventually, so does Morten Carlsen’s tenor sax. The concert which yielded this CD happened in a church in Denmark’s northernmost town, on the Jutland Peninsula. All members of this trio are founder-members of Pierre’s New Jungle Orchestra. which has spent time in China and many other places.

DØRGE BECKER CARLSEN - ’THE SKAGEN CONCERT’
4: 47
( Irene Becker’s piano at first alone on this ’live’ instrumental version of a very lyrical hymn by Denmark’s best-loved ’classical’ composer. The melody is ’sung’ by the tarogato { aka ’taragot’ - a central European, wooden-bodied hybrid of clarinet and soprano sax} played by Morten Carlsen. Irene shifts to synth-orchestration to support the tarogato. In latter part Dørge’s elec guitar enters and twines with the tarogato.

5: 44
( The author’s male voice and very deft finger-picked steel-string ac guitar, plus Richard Curran’s viola. Superbly crafted song which tells the amazing true life-and-death story of an 18th century English criminal. Some see/saw ’King David’ - David Hartley - as a ’Robin Hood’. Others think he was just a robbin’ hood. The most celebrated/notorious ’coiner’ was executed on May 1st, 1770. The low-quality/non-standard-sized coinage then in circulation made it possible for ’Coiners’ to become very rich. They clipped/shaved coins and then melted down and re-coined the shavings.
