Wanderlust

When in Rome ... give the locals an inspired, multi-cultural, Australian surprise! Wanderlust did so at Villa Celimontana one 2004 night, as documented on their new CD. When in Rome features a compact edition of Wanderlust, plus an oud-toting guest. He’s Joseph Tawadros. The band-proper is led by trumpeter and primary composer, Miroslav {Mike} Bukovsky. His colleagues are trombonist James Greening, drummer-percussionist Fabian Hevia and keyboardist Alister Spence. Their musical conversations range widely and probe deeply.

( Aretha sings up a smouldering-to-rampaging storm and plays excellent piano, with an unknown bassist/drummer. From 1996. A demo - never intended for release. {most cuts on this set are ’proper’ studio recordings, albeit almost all previously-unissued}. Lo-fi, with a deal of distortion, but the vocal is simply phenomenal.

We explore this double-CD next Saturday, May 17. Most cuts are previously unissued. This is just one of many which leave the listener wondering why on earth such performances stayed in a vault for thirty to forty years!

CHRIS WOOD - ’THE LARK DESCENDING’
9: 43
( love-song, extending over several decades. It is set in an English chip shop, The shy fish-frying bloke’s love for the chippy’s lovely daughter prevails...eventually! Beautifully written, and ditto the performance/musical setting by Chris - he’s the singer and ac guitarist. Very cleverly alludes to ’Lord Bateman’ { an epic trad English song in which the eventually-united lovers are English lord and Turkish princess} and to ancient legends of fishes swallowing tokens )

5: 00
(’live’, female voice w ac guitar bass, a spot of key-cheese and an uncanny lyric - set in a little saloon where news has just arrived of Crazy Horse’s death, ’sometime last September’ Briefly - a few years before this 1988 performance - the song’s author was Nanci’s husband. The song has one of the most potent last lines. Having accidentally { via his months-old newspaper } cheered up the saloon’s patrons with the news that Crazy Horse { circa 1842 - Sep 5, 1877 } had been killed, the Easterner has one more drink, then departs. As the Easterner leaves, ’he gives the paper to the Crow boy that sweeps up the floor.’
