Marcin Wasilweski Trio

January is the new CD from a splendid trio. Its Polish members are still young, but the line-up unchanged for 15 years. Suddenly, however, its name is ‘The Marcin Wasileski Trio’. Pianist Marcin, acoustic bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz are an equilateral triangle, still. But they have accepted ‘world market realities’ and that the American market would not ‘get’ the wry name which had caused the leaderless trio no ‘marketing difficulty’ at home. Poles have long recognised ‘The Simple Acoustic Trio’ (who are also the three much-the-younger members of Tomasz Stanko’s quartet) as very special. Be glad that ‘market realities’ had nothing to do with the new CD’s contents: beautiful, always-alert music, superbly recorded.

( quiet, spacious-introspective, but intense. Has a definitely-European accent. The sudden renaming of the trio after its pianist is purely to meet ’market realities’ in the USA. In truth, this Polish trio remains equilateral - drummer Michal Miskiewicz, double-bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and pianist Marcin.
However ’new’ to the USA, the trio has been a stable unit for 15 years. At home it has long been Poland’s leading jazz trio, under its preferred name - ’simple acoustic trio.’: )

Finnish Jazz Sensations: Iiro Rantala and Kimmo Pohjonen

Kimmo Pohjonen and Iiro Rantala overturn any preconceptions about Finnish music being ’ conservative’ . Their innovative flair was obvious at their 2008 Sydney Festival concerts - and in this forum. Virtuoso musicians both, they studied at the Sibelius Academy. Kimmo and Iiro embrace new technologies and delight in breaking rules. Kimmo Pohjonen is a singular accordionist. With samples and loops ( and a wildly theatrical performance style) his instrument can become an organ or even an orchestra. Iiro Rantala is a dazzling pianist, who became famous as leader of Trio Toykeat. His ’ New Trio’ features young electric guitarist Marzi Nyman and the even younger Felix Zenger on beatbox vocals.

These conversations with Festival Director Fergus Linehan were recorded during the 2008 Sydney Festival at ’Eat Drink Talk Art’ at The Mint.
