Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara

Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara recorded their Soul Science in two (very) English places. You would never guess! It is, however, easy to hear why it has been hailed as ‘an album to make the word fusion respectable again’. Juldeh Camara is a Gambian griot - an arresting singer whose ritti (one-string African fiddle) also really ‘sings’. He first heard his English friend’s guitar, unwittingly, on a tape dubbed off an Adams solo album. Camara remembers asking himself ‘who is this African? Where is he from?’ Their striking, passionate, assured CD ought to especially delight lovers of African music and the blues.

JUSTIN ADAMS, JULDEH CAMARA - ’SOUL SCIENCE’
5: 07
( You would never reasonably guess {and Juldeh did not guess, when he unwittingly first heard a recording of Justin’s} that the electric guitarist - Justin - is English rather than African. Mesmeric song for Justin’s elec. guitar, Juldeh’s male African voice and equally ’vocal’ ritti {aka ’riti’ and ’nyanyer’’, it is a single-string West African fiddle - of the Peul peple} , plus percussion and elec. bass. The song curses hypocrites, urges all to work hard and to love one another, and thanks those who listen )

(partly recorded in Senegal. Initially spare, then up, it has an ’epic’ quality. It features the fine female African voice of Binta Susso, and fiddler Juldeh Camara on the one-stringed West African fiddle known as riti or nyanyer. The leader plays really good kora and there’s also percussion, acoustic nylon-stringed guitar, and the location-sounds of African children, playing.

4: 30
( A throbbing whirler with multi-tracked Juldeh Camara on multiple ritis (one-stringed West African fiddles) and vocals, with Justin’s acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, elec. bass and a deal of processed sound too. It has peace/goodwill and dancing/enjoyment in mind and it really does ’cook’)
