Jonas Simonson {repeat: first aired on 11.11.07}

Jonas Simonson is an uncommonly fine, distinctive, imaginative and powerful player of various flutes. As one admirer observed, ‘he began with classical training, but converted to Swedish Folk Music and hasn’t been the same since (neither has Swedish Folk Music).’ He has recorded often, but Crane Dance is the first Jonas Simonson album as such. It is beautiful, not merely ‘pretty’. Some of its solo and ensemble pieces are ‘traditional’, or overtly refer to Nordic musical traditions. Others are novel.

(English female voice to fore w discreet electronics - beautifully poignant-cum-triumphant song of the workingman pigeon-fancier’s triumph in 1913. True story! It’s author says this:
’In a glass case in Derby Museum there’s a pigeon called ’The King of Rome’. In 1913 it flew from Italy back to its home loft in the West End of Derby. The Old West End used to be the rough side of town and Charlie Hudson, the man who bred The King lived there. I wrote the song because it’s about the kind of place I came from and the people I knew there.’
