New Jungle Orchestra

‘Jazz is Like a Banana.’ If you know which famous Frenchman said so, rejoice - the New Jungle Orchestra’s Jazz is Like a Banana is much more fun than he was! Danish guitarist Pierre Dørge founded the NJO in 1980. Musically and physically, they’ve explored more of our planet than has any other large ‘jazz’ ensemble. However defined, ‘jazz’ is but one of their many sources. The NJO is an ever-inventive, never-predictable marriage of tenderness, exuberance, reverence, dadaist humour, exquisitely intricate constructions, earthy grooves and spontaneous explosions.

( Very lyrical, unrushed requiem song for a late West African griot friend - Alhaji Bai Konte of the Gambia. Guitarist-leader Pierre has visited The Gambia at least ten times. The Orchestra sings as well as plays - nicely-gently, in Mandinkan/ Malinke, whilst not pretending to be Africans. Features Pierre’s elec.guitar, plus tenor sax and trumpet soloists. Dembo Konte - who sings and plays kora on ’Madiba Jabi’ {cut-following, in this show} - is the late dedicatee’s son )

(perky, at times blues-strutting, at times calypso-esque-cum-mambo piece for jazz-centric { but not just ’jazz’ } little big band. The composer is the electric guitarist, with solos on trumpet, tenor sax {Morten Carlsen, I think - a really good, post-Rollins/ post-Trane rampant solo} and robust trombone {Kenneth Agerholm}. Lots of shifts. It even -briefly - alludes to ’Caravan’. The title refers to a remark allegedly made in 1949 by Jean-Paul Sartre at the Paris Jazz Festival. He was speaking to Charlie ’Bird’ Parker, shortly after ’Bird’ had said ’I’m very glad to have met you Mr Sartre. I like your playing very much!’ )
