Mare Nostrum (Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano, Jan Lundgren)
|
Mare Nostrum means ‘our sea’. To the ancient Romans it was the Mediterranean - a sea with European, African and Asian shores. Notwithstanding pianist Jan Lundgren’s Swedish nationality, this beautifully unusual trio has a Mediterranean flavour. Mare Nostrum is the first three-way exchange between Jan, Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and the French (ancestrally, Italian) accordionist and bandoneon virtuoso Richard Galliano. Each is highly eclectic, highly individual, a noted leader. All are open-eared and conversational - quietly brilliant players who don’t shout out their virtuosity. The music is mostly their own, but they also do lovely, surprising things to pieces by Jobim, Ravel and Trénet.

(not what it seems: very catchy, with fine, strong ac bass from Cecil McBee, Don Cherry’s trumpet plus dobro, ac guitar, congas and Henry’s vocal.. depicts a suicide. From 1990. A decade later Ornette Coleman played on a Joe Henry album - his only appearance on a ’pop’, song-oriented album. After having politely declined Joe’s invitation, Ornette’s attention was drawn {not by Joe himself} to this album, on which Don - Ornette’s friend and former colleague - had enjoyed playing. Ornette listened. He liked it. He then took up Joe’s invitation, after all. Ornette has a superb cameo role on ’Richard Pryor addresses a tearful nation’ - a song on Joe Henry’s CD ’Scar’.. worth seeking out! )

(’Live’, fleet and ’free’. Even before you know that Ornette was seventy-five at the time of this Oct ’05 concert, his opening alto sax eruption is astonishing, as is his more extended sax flight: ablaze with energy, joy, invention. He also plays ok- but-less-wondrous trumpet on this. The whole band is marvellously alive-alert. Greg Cohen’s plucks one ac bass, arco specialist Tony Falanga bows the other, with drummer Denardo Coleman - Ornette’s son.

Improvising a Miracle - Kind of Blue in retrospect
Saturday 16 February, 5.05 pm
Repeated on Friday 22 February, 3. 05 pm
If there’s only one jazz album in your music collection, it’s probably Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. Universally recognised as a timeless masterpiece, it has sold more copies than any other jazz release. On the eve of its 50th anniversary, Cathy Peters looks at the album’s significance, along with jazz author Ashley Kahn and Australasian jazz veterans Mike Nock and Allan Browne.
It’s a remarkable album in many ways. It pioneered a new approach to jazz improvisation and harmony and featured some of the most outstanding musicians of the time. Recorded in two short studio sessions, it has an immediacy that’s palpable. Whether you’re a longtime lover of this album or have just discovered it, this program offers many insights into Miles, his musicians and how they made this timeless classic.
