As a child Jim McNeil used to steal cigarettes from the Yanks and after he left school he mixed with an underworld group in a beer house brothel, stealing from men who were in 'for a quickie'. In prison he joined the Resurgents Group, which got men talking about their violence, and he began to write plays. They were performed first in the prison then outside, in the early 70s. Jim also discusses male prisoners' ideas about women, homosexuality in jail and the particular language used by prisoners, which his audiences outside found hard to understand.
