Chika Dixon Part 2 of 2
|
Chika Dixon has spent his life fighting for the rights of Indigenous Australians. In the 1950s Chika was living in Redfern, and became involved in the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI). He worked on the wharfs in Sydney before being employed alongside Charles Perkins in the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, established by the Whitlam government in 1973.
In this final part of Chika Dixon's life story, he recalls the 1970s, when the decades of struggle for self-determination for Indigenous Australians began to be manifest in concrete change. Chika was involved in the opening of the first Aboriginal health service, in Redfern, and also took part in the setting up of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy outside Old Parliament House in Canberra. His work, in the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, also gave him the opportunity to meet with indigenous people from around the world.
