Segolene Royal
|
She's been described by one commentator as part Joan of Arc, part daytime talk show host.
Segolene Royal is the first woman since the famous Maid of Orleans to make a serious bid to lead France, but does she have what it takes to lead the Socialist Party to victory in next year's Presidential elections?
Royal easily won the party's nomination early last month, and what now lies ahead is five months of intensive campaigning, up against Nicolas Sarkozy, the charismatic and highly skilled leader of the UMP, the country's main conservative party.
So who is Segolene Royal? And are there policies to back up her unabashed populist approach, one that has captivated the French and reinvigorated the Socialist Party?
