New medievalism

In Jamaica, Dr John Rapley has observed a political phenomenon he calls new medievalism.

He argues that in many developing countries, where the state has never been particularly strong, there are similarities to the middle ages, where multiple and overlapping sovereignties and identities competed for power and authority.
