Labor leadership

The speculation over Kim Beazley's future has been put to rest, well at least it will be in about 48 hours from now.

Less than a year out from the next election Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard have declared themselves contenders for the Labor leadership, and indeed all the shadow ministries have been put up for grabs.

In many ways it appears to be a repeat of three years ago.

It was late 2003, when the inexperienced Mark Latham challenged Simon Crean, a warrior from Labor's past, to the leadership and won; leaving himself less than a year to establish his credentials before going to the polls.

We all know how that experiment ended, but what can we guess about Labor's fortunes after Monday's ballot, and what will be the message and mood from the avalanche of phone calls that will take place between Labor MPs this weekend as the contenders attempt to firm up the numbers?
