Fiji politics

It's been a week of dramatic events in Fiji, the stand-off between the prime minister, Mr Qarase, and the head of the armed forces, Commodore Banimarama, has still not been resolved.

Attempts to calm down the situation were made during the week with talks between the two in New Zealand and a special Pacific Forum meeting in Sydney yesterday. However, the mood is still brittle.

So what has led Fiji to this current political situation, and what are the longer term effects of this instability?
