The Southern provinces of Thailand have been experiencing an ongoing
violent struggle with hundreds of lives lost since the trouble began in
2004.
To understand the nature of the conflict and to assess possible
solutions, The National Reconciliation Commission has completed a report
investigating the situation in Southern Thailand. One of the principal
authors is Professor Chaiwat Satha - Anand, his recommendations
include a radical idea to establish a special "unarmed" army unit to
de-escalate the violence.
