Last year the Australian government proposed a citizenship test for migrants that would test English skills and knowledge of Australian history and 'values'. Some countries already have a citizenship test, including the United Kingdom; and the man who advised the British government on the test was Sir Bernard Crick. Sir Bernard has been a long-standing protagonist for multiculturalism and what he calls 'active citizenship'.
