Carbon credit card

In the UK, talks are underway to introduce a carbon-rationing scheme, whereby individuals will be given an annual allowance of the carbon they could expend on products ranging from food, energy and travel. Under the proposal, every citizen would be issued with a carbon 'credit card' to be swiped every time they bought petrol, paid an energy utility bill or booked an airline ticket. The proposal could come into operation within five years, according to a feasibility study commissioned by the UK's Environment Secretary, David Milliband.The study is titled A Rough Guide to Individual Carbon Trading, prepared by the Centre for Sustainable Energy in the UK

Can corporations embrace the value of social and environmental initiatives in their supply chain, and still remain competitive? Big corporations such as the giant sporting company Nike has for years been criticised by activists over its labour practices outside the United States—eventually forcing the company, the first major apparel manufacturer, to disclose its entire supply chain voluntarily. Now, in the technology and electronics industry a similar, if not more pro-active attitude is being adopted, with Hewlett-Packard leading the way.

The Freecycle Network

Technology and the environment haven't always been the most comfortable of bedfellows. Indeed the built-in obsolescence of many goods, particularly computers, is proving a huge challenge for how we manage waste and landfill in the 21st century. But in the case of the Freecycle Network the ubiquitous computer is at the front line of efforts to, not only reduce landfill, but to provide people with a whole host of useful household items – and all for free!
