Community groups meet today in Melbourne to reaffirm religious tolerance. Gary Bouma has been looking at patterns of belief in the UK and says that the rest of the world should take a look at Australia's religious school system. He sees it as providing security for parents and the state, giving them both a say in shaping their children's values.

A 'dogs breakfast' is how the Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson described last week the way the education system examines school leavers. Currently each state and territory has a separate way of assessing students. But Dr Nelson wants to change that to a national system which he believes will also improve the standard of education. However, critics say the system is working fine, and that there are more pressing issues to address. So why is Dr Nelson pushing so hard for change in an area that constitutionally is out of his reach?
