UN Fish Stocks review

27/05/2006
Delegates from the world's fishing nations have been meeting at UN headquarters in New York this week to review the laws protecting the planet's marine resources. The United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement - or FSA - is in it's fifth year of operation. But as we're about to hear there are numerous impediments that continue to hamper the effectiveness of what is supposed to be the blueprint for management of high seas fishing. Conservation groups say international protocols governing fishing are more honoured in their breach than their observance, and they're pushing for greater regulation. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that about 25 per cent of the fish stocks it monitors are overexploited, while roughly half of the stocks are fully exploited.
