The Call to Prayer

The Islamic call to prayer, Qur'anic recitation, and Gregorian chant all share a belief in the power of the unadorned human voice. We'll hear from each of these ancient traditions, along with scholar and Islamic chaplain Dr Abdurrahman Asaroglu who reveals the history of adhan, the call to prayer.

Further Information

The Cistercian Abbey of Stift Heikligenkreuz
Founded in 1133 by Saint Leopold III as a house of prayer to thank and praise. In Heiligenkreuz the liturgical prayers of the Church are still sung in the ancient liturgical music of the western Church: Gregorian Chant.

Yusuf Islam on Islam and the Qur'an
The Qur'an is considered by Muslims to be the last revealed word of God.

The Adhan (The Call to Prayer)
'The adhan is the call given to announce that it is time for a particular obligatory Salah (ritual Prayer). Five times a day the adhan is raised from mosques throughout the world. It is a Sunnah (optional duty) that brings its own reward from Allah (God). The person who gives the adhan is called a muadhdhin. (The English word "muezzin" is a mispronunciation of the Arabic term.)' From IslamOnline.net
