Australians more relaxed on immigration

It may sound counter-intuitive for a country built around immigration, but when it comes to sharing our boundless plains with other who come across the sea we have mixed feelings. Governments - with an eye firmly on economic imperatives -often ignore anti-immigration sentiment. Just take the Howard government: while getting tough on boat people it was cranking up our migrant intake, in a bid to fill the skills gap of a booming economy. Yet despite immigration now running at record levels, a new survey is suggesting we are more relaxed about the issue than we have been in the past.
