This week: a centenary, a revival and a prize-winning Australian composer. December 10 marks the centenary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen, one of the most individual and influential composers of the 20th century; we discuss his musical significance with biographer Peter Hill. We also talk to Chas Rader-Shieber who is directing Pinchgut Opera's production of David and Jonathan by Charpentier. It's the Australian premiere of this piece, which had its world premiere in Paris in 1688. And we talk to composer Damian Barbeler about recent performances and successes. This week's podcast interview is Damian Barbeler.

These days Barry Tuckwell lives in semi-retirement in rural Victoria, but he has packed a lot in since he started playing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. Indeed it wasn't very long after that he became principal horn with the London Symphony Orchestra. He's a conductor as well, and I recorded a conversation with him which we broadcast on The Music Show in September of last year. We began by listening to Barry Tuckwell playing by Oliver Knussen, Knussen's Horn Concerto composed specially for Barry Tuckwell.
