Two prickly American songwriters talk to Andrew Ford: Steve Earle and Martha Wainwright.Karnatic musicians led by the great mridingam player Guru Karaikkudi R. Mani play and demo live. Podcast is the interview with Steve Earle. Steve Earle got himself into big trouble when he recorded 'John Walker's Blues' about the US detainee and Muslim John Walter Lindh. His most recent album is a love song to his two new passions; his wife Alison Moorer and New York City where The Earles now live. But it's not all sweetness and light as he kicks against two of his pet issues, immigration and the death penalty. Does he think he'll be able to stop singing about these things with Obama in the White House? Martha Wainwright's famous family offers plenty of songwriting scope on her new album I Know You're Married but I've got Feelings Too. And there's a fine if scary name-check of musos helping out on this second album: Garth Hudson, Donald Fagen, Pete Townshend and brother Rufus. And Jessica Nicholas reviews new jazz CD's.
