ABC Radio National offers interesting ideas, thoughtful responses, informed analysis and an international perspective. That approach applies to our programs on politics, religion, art, science, society ... and music.
The Weekend Planet offers a unique, informed musical journey, each Saturday and Sunday night. You can also enjoy it whenever you wish: our audio is yours to demand for four weeks after radio broadcast.
The Weekend Planet ranges across the world's most eloquent, vibrant, individual, intimate, inventive and beautiful music. Each edition is highly diverse, but has a particular focus. Surprising connections abound.
Good players don't put music into little boxes. We don't either.
Much of what we share is 'conversational', has a quality of 'happening in the moment'. None is merely 'product'. Markets and fads are not our musicians' goalposts. We value skill, spontaneity, depth, passion, intelligence and integrity, the spirit of play. You'll hear various folk/roots styles, jazz, blues and 'art' musics—much is nigh-impossible to pigeon-hole, but very easy to enjoy.
If you seek a particular disc or wish to attend a musical event we mention, our playlists provide the necessary information. They often include other links, too. We publish them by (or before) the Friday before broadcast.
The new Weekend Planet and new Daily
Planet build on the legacy of The Planet. From 1990 to
2005 The Planet was a unique window into diverse, traditional
and innovative musics; from 1999, continuously, it won Rhythms
Magazine's readers' poll for Australia's 'National Music Program
of the Year'.
The Weekend Planet's producer-presenter Doug Spencer was
The Planet's founder-producer. The
Planet playlists from November 1995 through to Jan 2006
are archived and can be searched on-line.
