Trash and Treasure: Sue Maslin on 'The Man From Snowy River'

Review

by Jason Di Rosso, Sue Maslin

Australian producer Sue Maslin has chosen a film that was hated by critics when it came out in 1982 just as much as it was loved by audiences. She thinks the critics got it wrong. Directed by George Miller (not the doctor) and based on the Banjo Patterson poem, it's a frontier romance about a young horseman (Tom Burlinson) and a cattle station heiress (Sigrid Thornton). For the romance to blossom, though, there's lots of things he needs to do -- wild brumbies have to be tamed, a runaway prize colt has to be found, and Sigrid's father, played by Kirk Douglas, has to be won over.
