Review
by Jason Di Rosso, Clare Stewart
Today Sydney Film Festival artistic director Clare Stewart on a wartime classic from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger -- The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Made in 1943, it provoked the ire of Winston Churchill because of its whimsical, warm portrayal of a longstanding friendship between two soldiers, stretching from the Boer war to World War Two, one British (Clive Candy, played by Roger Livesey); the other German (Theo, played by Anton Wallbrook). It also stars Deborah Kerr in three different roles, representing Candy's ideal woman for each season of his life, and the film screens as part of a Deborah Kerr retrospective at this year's festival.
