Trash and Treasure: David Stratton on 'Letter From an Unknown Woman'

Review

by Jason Di Rosso, David Stratton

Today David Stratton, critic from ABC TV's 'At The Movies' has chosen Max Ophuyl's 1948 Letter From an Unknown Woman. Set in Vienna at the turn of the century, Louis Jordain is a socialite bachelor and concert pianist who's world is rocked by a letter written by a woman on her deathbed - a woman he'd forgotten. Cut to years earlier and we see her, played by Joan Fontain - young and besotted by him, seduced and then abbandoned. she falls pregnant with his child, marries someone else but remains in love with him. They meet again years later, briefly, but it's not to be. A tragedy about misplaced love and missed opportunities.
