Green Matters is a new Life Matters weekly series on the environment featuring writer and environmentalist Tanya Ha.
The theme for this year's Australia Day celebrations is hope, and the Governor General Michael Jeffery has identified caring as his personal theme for his remaining time in office.
Caring for the environment is part of his agenda but why should we care?
