No other dance draws a man and a woman into such intimate contact; no other music connects so completely body to body, heart to heart, soul to soul. Tango fulfils the innate human need to hold and be held. Sydney Tango DJ and musicologist Martin Cohen traces the evolution of Argentine tango from the brothels of Buenos Aires in the 1890s to the concert halls, theatrical stages and dance venues of the world.

The giant figures of Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla loom above a galaxy of tango composers, lyricists, arrangers, instrumentalists and singers. Featured in this passionate program are Sonia Abadi, an Argentinian author/psychiatrist, Faye Bendrups, an Australian tango PhD, Guillermo Anad, an Argentinian tango musician/historian/broadcaster, Carel Kraayenhof, a visiting Dutch bandoneon maestro, and the revolutionary Piazzolla himself, along with South American immigrants, Wendy Charell and members of the tango dance community and a generous sampling of the classic Tango Argentino repertoire.
