Bruce Beresford - The Sound of Pictures
|
Bruce Beresford is a film director so musically intelligent that he is regularly invited to direct operas but, in his films, Beresford's sensitivity to music frequently leads him away from including obvious musical cues. Andrew Ford visited the composer in his Sydney home for a typically candid conversation about music in film and why there's far too much of it.
In Beresford pictures such as Don's Party, 'Breaker' Morant and Tender Mercies, the only music to be heard is played on screen by musicians whom we see, or via a radio or record player. Even when Beresford commissions a score, as he did for Crimes of the Heart, Driving Miss Daisy and Double Jeopardy (because Hollywood insists on a score) he tends to use it sparingly.
This captivating, musically illustrated encounter for Into the Music is one of an occasional series of Andrew Ford's musical conversations with great figures in film.
