Into The Music

Finnish musicians Kimmo Pohjonen and Iiro Rantala are virtuoso players bursting with imaginative energy, pursuing fresh musical and performance ideas and embracing new technologies. Those enthusiasms were on show during their concerts at the 2008 Sydney Festival and in this entertaining forum recorded during their visit.

Kimmo Pohjonen is an accordionist like no other. Using samples and loops, which he generates in a wildly theatrical performance style, he can make his instrument sound like an organ or even an orchestra. Iiro Rantala is best known as the dazzling pianist in the famous Finnish jazz outfit Trio Toykeat, but it was the Iiro Rantala New Trio that he brought to Australia this time, making exhilarating music with young performers Felix Zenger on beatbox vocals and Marzi Nyman on electric guitar.

Recorded during the 2008 Sydney Festival at Eat Drink Talk Art at The Mint in Sydney in conversation with festival director Fergus Linehan.
