Melbourne
Deakin Lectures – From DNA to Deep Space
4 – 15 June 2008
View full details of the free Deakin Lectures series

The following ABC Radio National presenters are delighted to be moderating sessions at this year’s Deakin Lectures including:

Natasha Mitchell – All in the Mind

6 June, 6pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
Starting with the Brain
It all begins with the brain. In a world where new designer drugs offer the potential to make us smarter and to change how our minds work, this lecture takes us on a journey into the brain and looks at recent research into neuroscience and some of the ethical issues in the latest directions.

7 June, 2pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
The Body and the Machine
Humans are found everywhere on Earth. Yet how did we get here?  Where did we come from? Why do we all look so different? How are we evolving, and why? And what are the similarities between humans and zebrafish?

7 June, 4.30pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
The Limits on Technology
While neuroscience and biomedicine speed ahead at an awesome pace, there are many ethical and legal barriers to unfettered progress.  How far and how fast can we go in our demand for new technologies?  Just because we can build a better mousetrap or create a genetically modified ‘super mouse’, should we? And how do we avoid repeating the mistakes of the past?

Alan Saunders – By Design and The Philosopher’s Zone

10 June, 6pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
Planning Cities of the Future
Australia is the most urbanised society on the planet. Melbourne is predicted to overtake Sydney as Australia’s largest city. This lecture considers the cities we live in and the way we are planning and building for the future.

11 June, 12.30pm: Supper Room, Melbourne Town Hall
Cities, Nations, Trains and Transport
Melbourne is always at the top of the world’s most liveable cities list and its tram system is the envy of the nation. Yet the recent release of the Eddington Report into Melbourne’s east-west transport needs produced a huge reaction. Everyone has a view on how best to tackle the issue of transport (and the associated horrors of pollution, congestion and road rage) and in this conversation you will hear some of the most passionate views.

Peter Mares – The National Interest

13 June, 6pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
The New Internationalism
How will Australia relate to other nations, especially those in this region, as those nations develop and grow?  What kind of ‘new’ paths are we looking at – and what are the new features of those countries?  Join five very different speakers who talk from experience about their thoughts and aspirations for Australia on the international arena.

14 June, 4.30pm: BMW Edge, Federation Square
The Deakin Debate: That Climate Change is the Only Issue
While considerations of the environment in general and climate change in particular are felt by many people to be the most important issues in our world today, others believe that even more urgently needed are changes in currently accepted human behaviour and thinking; these changes might successfully change attitudes and action around more than just climate change.
