Extending the school year

If you're a working parent, it just doesn't add up, trying to make four weeks annual leave cover twelve weeks of school holidays.

Most parents rely on a combination of leave, friends, family and formal care to cover school holidays.

According to Maxine McKew, the parliamentary secretary for childcare, this is a 'crazy' state of affairs.

She says we need to 'think big' and work out some kind of realignment of the school year and the work year.
