Not Quite Hollywood
The 1970s and 80s were an important era in Australian cinema. Films like Picnic At Hanging Rock and My Brilliant Career launched local cinema on to the world stage. Back then young directors like Phillip Noyce and Peter Weir were starting to make a splash in Hollywood. But at home, a very different film culture was emerging. I'm talking here about films like The Man From Hong Kong, thrillers like Turkey Shoot—and who can forget Alvin Purple or The Adventures of Barry McKenzie?
