Malaysian politics
Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says he is confident of winning a critical by-election today despite claims of a dirty-tricks campaign to undermine him. Today's by-election in his home state of Penang is expected to be the turning point in Anwar Ibrahim's political career. If he wins, he will return to parliament and lay the foundations to overthrow the government by, in his words, September 16th. But again, in the background, is the ongoing sodomy charge against him. It was a similar sodomy charge that saw him spend nearly a decade in prison.
