French soldiers killed in Afghanistan
Ten French soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in one of the deadliest attacks to strike NATO forces there in years.
A further 21 French troops were wounded after they were ambushed by insurgents near the capital Kabul in a large-scale and well coordinated attack.
French president Nicolas Sarkozy will now travel to Afghanistan to reassure his troops that they have his country's full support.
But with the Taliban-led insurgency gaining momentum, NATO's resolve could be seriously tested if the security situation deteriorates further.
