Fiji boycott

The last hope for a return to democracy in Fiji now rests with a proposed meeting of the country's political leaders, facilitated by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the UN.

That's the opinion of many senior Fijian political figures and observers, after the country's military government further isolated itself from regional neighbours by boycotting the Pacific Islands Forum, being held this week.

Fiji's interim prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, has further inflamed concern about the country's future by again insisting that national elections cannot be held in Fiji until major reforms to the electoral system are undertaken.
