Increased numbers of Indigenous people behind bars
Twenty years ago the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody found Indigenous people were significantly over represented among prisoners, making up 14 per cent of the population behind bars.
In the decades since, the rate of Indigenous deaths in custody has declined but at the same time the number of Indigenous people in prison has increased.
A report out today hopes to find a way to reduce the alarming figures by addressing the health of prisoners.
