Alexander Downer appointed as UN Cyprus envoy
The former foreign minister has confirmed he's quitting politics to help revive long-stalled peace talks between the Greeks and Turks on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Cyprus has been split since a 1974 Turkish invasion triggered by a brief Greek Cypriot coup. But with both sides now showing renewed political will, Alexander Downer is being urged to seize the moment.
