The 100-Mile Diet
Have you ever thought about how far the food you eat has travelled? Most food in our supermarkets has come from a long way away, some of it, tens of thousands of kilometres and it comes at a significant ecological impact.
But what if you ate just locally produced food, like people did 100 years ago? This was a question James MacKinnon asked of his partner, journalist Alisa Smith in 2005. The result was a quest to restrict themselves to food obtained from within a 100 mile or 160 kilometre radius of their home in Vancouver, and so the 'The 100 Mile Diet' phenomenon began. A book, an internet site and a following around the world, including a Melbourne restaurant.
