US airlines on brink of bankruptcy as fuel price soars
As Qantas cries poor to its striking aircraft engineers, the US airline industry is arguably in more dire straits. A new study says the skyrocketing price of aviation fuel could force many US airlines into liquidation, with devastating implications for the American economy. Having just recovered from the September 11 terrorists attacks, US airlines are in no shape to sustain fuel prices at $130 US a barrel or more. The report comes from the airline industry research and advocacy group the Business Travel Coalition.
