Protection for doctors
It's been two years since the shocking murder of Melbourne doctor Khulod Maarouf-Hassan, stabbed to death in her own consulting rooms by a mentally ill patient. Sudanese migrant 26-year-old Samuel Benjamin was charged with her murder but found not guilty earlier this year because of mental impairment.
Benjamin has been diagnosed as schizophrenic and is now serving 25 years in a secure psychiatric facility. The case not only raises debate about how to better protect doctors but also exposes how mental health care too often shifts into the criminal justice system.
