Qantas and unions lock horns in industrial dispute

An industrial showdown may be looming between the national carrier, Qantas, and its aircraft maintenance engineers. Some say it could rival the bitter and protracted 1998 Australian waterfront dispute. The airline's engineers have been waging an 18-month campaign for a 5% wage rise, but Qantas has capped non-executive pay rises at 3%. The engineers' union claims it has documents showing that Qantas is preparing to break any strike action, with non-union labour.
