Mining milestone for Fortescue

The former 'iron-ore wannabe' the Fortescue Metals Group is now calling itself 'the new force in iron ore' after loading its first shipment to China. The company was formed only in 2003 and it has overcome significant hurdles to meet the deadline for its first shipment, including building new rail and port facilities, and ongoing court battles with market leaders. Its success is being seen as a heartening lesson for other, smaller players mining the Pilbara.
