Tests may be used for needs based schools funding

Across Australia this week, about one million primary and secondary school students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are sitting the first truly national literacy and numeracy tests. And while the tests are meant to be all about improving individual educational achievement, this year's tests have re-ignited old arguments about funding for needy students and schools, and once again raised the spectre of 'league tables' being published that rank individual schools, especially the bad ones. Lyndsay Connors is an associate professor in education at Sydney University and chair of the former NSW Public Education Council.
