Federal politics with Michelle Grattan

Tonight Wayne Swan will deliver his first Budget. He's already promised he will deliver on election commitments, but will be tough on government spending in a bid to bring down inflation and interest rates. It's the key moment for the treasurer, allowing him to step up and out of the Kevin Rudd limelight. The government has already revealed some Budget items, like the changes to the Medicare levy and a surcharge and means testing for the baby bonus. But how will the government and the opposition handle the mixed messages this Budget sends out?
