AMA says Medicare changes will increase load on public hospitals
The federal government is increasing the income thresholds for both the Medicare levy, which applies to nearly everyone except the very poor, and the Medicare surcharge, which applies to the well-off. The Australian Medical Association says the change will remove the incentives for many people to belong to private health funds, and will therefore place much more pressure on the public hospital system, which is already ailing.
